The Flea Market Sentiment
The flea market is a maze of local gems. You don’t know what to expect, and there’s something new at every turn, emitting a wondrous magnetic charm. Whether it’s decaying arcade machines or a rare vintage record, the personability and surprises found at these mom-and-pop shops isn't your average consumer experience. "The Flea Market Sentiment" captures the distinctive qualities of three of Jacksonville, Florida’s major flea markets: The Beach Boulevard Flea Market, the Pecan Flea Market, and the Ramona Flea Market. The series highlights the character of small business communities by documenting kiosks, their products, and the hard-working people who sell them.
The images contribute to de-stigmatizing flea markets as particularly “grimy” and “risky” by illuminating the vibrant atmosphere it is. There is an organized chaos within these fences and once you learn to navigate it, it can be touching what you learn. The spirit of exchange where sellers determine their own worth and buyers can trade or bargain, enriches the community. Diving into the allure of old trinkets, local creations, and nostalgic toys, brings a refreshing youthfulness to commerce – It’s not as detached and corporate, but more of a personal experience.
Although, it’s not all cash and materials; stories are exchanged too. That sense of warm community can add so much meaning and emotional value to a simple possession. These five (out of forty) images only catch a mere glimpse within these ever-changing places.
